Beginner’s Guide to Making Your Own Fruit Chips

Choose Your Fruits

Almost any fruit can be turned into chips, but the most popular choices include apples, bananas, pears, and mangoes. Choose fruits that are ripe but not overly so, as they will provide the best flavor and texture when dried.

Prepare Your Fruit

  1. Wash and Dry: Begin by thoroughly washing your fruit to remove any pesticides or impurities. Dry them completely.
  2. Slice: Using a sharp knife or a mandoline slicer, cut your fruit into thin, even slices. The thinner the slices, the crisper your chips will be.
  3. Treat to Prevent Browning: For fruits like apples and pears, soak the slices in a mixture of lemon juice and water (1 tablespoon of lemon juice to 1 cup of water) for about five minutes. This step helps prevent browning.

Season (Optional)

Before drying, you can season your fruit slices to enhance their flavor. Sprinkle with cinnamon, nutmeg, or ginger for a warm, spicy note. For a sweeter treat, a light dusting of powdered sugar works well.

Dry the Fruit

You can dry your fruit chips in an oven or a dehydrator:

  • Oven Method:
    • Preheat your oven to the lowest temperature setting, usually between 170°F and 200°F (75°C – 95°C).
    • Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and arrange the fruit slices in a single layer.
    • Bake for 1 to 3 hours, flipping the slices halfway through until they are dried and crispy.
  • Dehydrator Method:
    • Place the fruit slices in a single layer on the dehydrator trays.
    • Follow your dehydrator’s instructions, typically setting the temperature to 135°F (57°C) and drying for 6 to 12 hours.

Cool and Store

Allow the fruit chips to cool completely. They will crisp up further as they cool. Store your homemade fruit chips in an airtight container at room temperature. They should last for several weeks, but chances are they’ll be eaten long before then!
